Research: Most Latvians Want a Salary Increase in 2023

At the end of last year, Stafferty conducted a study to find out what the career and salary expectations of Latvian citizens are in 2023, which revealed that Latvian citizens hope to claim a much higher salary.
Almost 200 percent of the respondents were women (54%). By age group, the majority of respondents were aged 55 and over (37%), followed by respondents aged 35-44 (26%). As indicated, among the most difficult professional specializations are education, personnel management and administrative workers, while the least number of respondents noted that they work in construction and sales.
What career goals do Latvians want to achieve in the New Year? More than half of participants reported an intention to start a new project (29%) and a desire to receive a salary increase at their current workplace (29%), while some respondents revealed that they wanted to change jobs at their current workplace (17%). In addition, 11% of respondents indicated that they want to finish their current work and relax. The least respondents noted that they want a promotion or change their specialty.
In order to find out what expectations the population has regarding salary, survey participants were asked to indicate what salary they would be satisfied with in the New Year by choosing one of the following answer options:
- Twice as much than currently (31%);
- 20% more than currently (29%);
- 50% more than currently (20%);
- I am satisfied with my current salary (11%);
- A higher salary will not make me happier (9%).
The answers regarding salary expectations among the respondents are very similar – the majority revealed that they would like to receive twice as much, at least 20% or 50% more than the current salary.
"The results of the survey reflect one of the main problems of the past year - inflation. As prices rise, so do employee expectations for higher pay, apparently. Although several companies have immediately raised the salaries of employees as soon as inflation started, many Latvian residents are still hoping for such an opportunity," comments Inese Rence, head of the personnel selection group, Stafferty.
