    In the dynamic world of IT recruitment within the Baltic States, it is important to understand a unique perspective, that sheds light on the intricate tapestry of opportunities and challenges that define this ever-evolving landscape. To understand the particularities of the IT recruitment world, we interviewed Olga Uusmaa – an IT Recruiter from the Estonian team.

    Olga, how did you get started in this field, and what motivated you to specialize in IT recruitment?

    “I have a master’s degree in IT but could not see myself becoming a full-time developer due to my personality – I have always wanted a job that combines technology with working with people. This mix is exactly what I have been aiming for.”

    How would you describe the current IT job market in the Baltics? Have you observed any specific trends or shifts in recent years? 

    “The IT job market in the Baltic States is promising and growing. The region is experiencing an increase in technology investments, digitalization, and the establishment of tech startups. The Baltic States are known for fostering technology hubs and supporting startup ecosystems. For example, Tallinn, is home to a growing number of startups and Estonia has gained international recognition for its advancements in e-governance.”

    Could you share insights on the types of companies that are actively recruiting IT professionals in the Baltics? Are there certain industries that stand out in terms of demand? 

    “From my experience, several types of companies in the Baltics are actively recruiting IT professionals – those that stand out are Tech Startups, Fintech, Gaming and Entertainment, Software Development and IT Consultancies, E-Governance and Public Sector, Energy and Environment.“

    When approaching a new IT recruitment project, what steps do you typically take to understand the client's needs and requirements? How do you ensure alignment between candidate and company expectations?

    “Approaching an IT recruitment project effectively involves a thorough understanding of both the client's needs and the candidate's capabilities. Here are the important steps I take:

    • Initial meeting with the client.

    • Creation of a detailed job description, and the image of the ideal candidate.

    • Getting to know the company and the team.

    • Sourcing, screening, and interviewing the candidates.

    • Gathering and giving feedback.

    • Supporting candidates and clients throughout the process.

    These steps, clear communication, active listening, and building strong relationships with both the client and the candidates are crucial for the likelihood of successful placements.”

    Looking ahead, what do you foresee as the biggest challenges or opportunities in IT recruitment in the Baltics?

    “As technology evolves rapidly, there could be a continued challenge in finding candidates with the latest and specialized skills required for emerging technologies like AI, blockchain, and cybersecurity. The demand for IT professionals might outstrip the supply, leading to competition among companies to attract skilled candidates. But by investing in education and training programs, the Baltics can develop a skilled workforce that aligns with emerging tech trends.”

    If you had to provide one piece of advice to new or aspiring IT recruiters, what would it be based on your experience in the field? 

    “My advice for new IT recruiters is to prioritize building genuine connections with both clients and candidates. It can make a significant difference to your success. Understanding needs enables you to make more accurate and satisfying matches. Successful placements and positive experiences lead to repeat business and referrals. By focusing on relationships, you can differentiate yourself as a recruiter who understands and supports the needs of the IT community.“
