How to Make a Great Impression at a Job Interview
Job hunting while being unemployed can be exhausting. But when it comes to interviews, you want to be on your A Game. And while there are lots of tips out there on what questions you should be ready to answer, what you do before and after can be just as important. Things like showing up on time, sending a thank-you note immediately, and not having your cell ring mid-interview can affect whether you get the job. That’s why we've put together 10 useful tips to help you successfully prepare for your next job interview:

How to prepare before the interview?

    • Research the company. Understanding key information about the company you’re interviewing with can help you go into your interview with confidence. Using the company’s website, social media posts and recent press releases will provide a solid understanding of the company’s goals and how your background makes you a great fit.
    • Reread the job description. You may want to print it out and begin underlining specific skills the employer is looking for. Think about examples from your past and current work that align with these requirements.
    • Do a social media sweep. Few employers will judge you harshly for having an Instagram or Twitter that reflects your personal life and interests, but you do want to make sure any social channels you have are something you wouldn’t mind them seeing.
    • Bring A Notebook. This one is easy. If you bring a notebook, you look prepared. And if there is something you want to remember for later, whether it’s a question or something you want to bring up in your thank-you notes, you’ll be able to jot it down on the spot, not rely on your powers of recollection.
    • Get there early. Plan your schedule so that you can arrive 10–15 minutes early. Map out your route to the interview location so you can be sure to arrive on time. Consider doing a practice run. If you’re taking public transportation, identify a backup plan if there are delays or closures.

What to do during the interview?

    • Think of questions to ask. At some point, you’re likely going to be asked, “Do you have any questions for me?” Don’t pass it up — it’s a good chance to show you’re really interested, and give your interviewer a chance to talk a bit about themselves. A question about management style or company culture is a great place to start.
    • Win them over with your authenticity and positivity. Being genuine during interview conversations can help employers easily relate to you. Showing positivity with a smile and upbeat body language can help keep the interview light and constructive.
    • Keep your answers concise and focused. Your time with each interviewer is limited so be mindful of rambling. Practicing your answers beforehand can help keep you focused.
    • Do not speak negatively about your previous employers. Companies want to hire problem solvers who overcome tough situations. If you’re feeling discouraged about your current job, focus on talking about what you’ve gained from that experience and what you want to do next.

    After the interview

    • Send a personalized thank you letter after the interview. Ask for the business card of each person you speak with during the interview process so that you can follow up individually with a separate thank you email. If you interviewed in the morning, send your follow-up emails the same day. If you interviewed in the afternoon, the next morning is fine. Make certain that each email is distinct from the others, using the notes you took during the conversations.
